Bird x Butterfly: Live in San Francisco | Concert on Medium Format Film
In February, I had the chance to photograph Bird x Butterfly, a Korean-American indie pop band, during their live intimate concert in San Francisco. The energy of the night — soft, layered, and hauntingly melodic — was the perfect match for shooting on medium format film.
Their music blends synths, poetic vocals, and subtle beats into something atmospheric and distinctly their own. Photographing the concert on film allowed me to stay present, slow down, and capture the raw, cinematic mood of the performance.
The venue was intimate, dimly lit, and buzzing with a quiet reverence. The audience felt more like collaborators than spectators — deeply tuned in, fully there.
What I love about working Frances and Paul is how naturally they inhabit their space. No overdone performance. Just honest, magnetic presence. And when you photograph that with a film camera, especially on medium format, something clicks. Every frame feels like a still from a dream sequence.
If you’ve never heard Bird x Butterfly before, I’d recommend starting with their debut album — it’s like a mixtape for your inner world.
I’ll be sharing a few selects from this night on my Instagram soon.
